What is Huddersfield to you?
To me, Huddersfield is like the backdrop of the industrial revolution, a silent witness to history, embodying the spirit of innovation and progress. It’s the ghost of that era, reminding us of our industrial heritage and the strides we’ve made as a society.
I often imagine it as a time machine, longing to revisit those bygone days when the town was bustling with activity and creativity. Huddersfield is a vibrant, aggressive, and innovative town, leading the way in sectors like engineering and textiles.
What is Huddersfield like today?
Today, I believe it’s still a successful town. I do think it’s got the potential. It’s sandwiched between Leeds and Manchester but Huddersfield has to know its place. Rather than step up it needs to find its own voice. It needs to find it’s own personality.
I’d say Huddersfield is like a ‘Hibernating Bear’ – it has strength and it’s fearless.
It can sit on a national and global stage but at the moment it is a little sleepy – it needs waking up.
What surprises you about Huddersfield?
What surprises me, in a good way, is the enduring authenticity of Huddersfield. Despite the passage of time and the inevitable changes, you could disappear for a while and come back to find it largely unchanged. It’s like the town has its own unique identity, firmly rooted in its history and culture. The people of Huddersfield know who they are, and there’s a sense of pride in that authenticity.
What do you think needs improving in Huddersfield?
Times have changed, and Huddersfield must adapt accordingly. While it’s a great town with a rich heritage, there’s always room for improvement. Looking ahead to the next 25 years, I believe there’s immense potential for growth and development. But to realise this potential, Huddersfield needs to embrace change, innovate, and evolve with the times.
How does Huddersfield make you feel?
Growing up in Huddersfield, I’ve lived in at least 20 different houses, and each one holds a special place in my heart. The town stimulates my creativity and fills me with a sense of nostalgia and belonging. What sets Huddersfield apart for me is the authenticity of its people. There’s a genuine warmth and sincerity here that’s hard to find elsewhere.
How would you sum up Huddersfield?
Huddersfield is like a diamond in the rough – it has incredible potential, but it needs polishing. Despite its challenges, I believe it has a bright future ahead. However, to unlock that potential, Huddersfield needs to confront its identity problem and embrace change. It’s time for the town to step out of its comfort zone, think bigger, and showcase its strengths to the world.
