Equity Begins Where We Stand: Reflections from Huddersfield.
As Vice Principal at the Institute for Equity, University Centre, I often describe our work in simple terms: we help organisations create the conditions in which people can thrive. Whether we’re supporting a local charity, a national business, a public‑sector organisation or a university, our focus is always the same: strengthening leadership, building capability and enabling cultures where equity is lived, not just talked about.
Being based in Huddersfield keeps us grounded in the realities of people’s lives and reminds us that equity is not an abstract concept. It’s something that happens in workplaces, communities and institutions, right here, where people live and lead.
Our work spans research, capacity development and institutional support. In practice, that might mean helping an organisation understand where inequities are emerging, working with leaders to build confidence and capability, or supporting teams to redesign systems so that everyone has a fair chance to succeed. We don’t arrive with a fixed model. We listen, we learn and we co‑create an approach that fits the people in front of us. Equity looks different in every organisation, and our role is to help each one define what it means for them.
Across Yorkshire, we work with a wide range of partners: businesses, charities, local authorities, health organisations, schools, colleges and universities. People usually come to us when they recognise that equity is not just a moral imperative but a strategic one. They want to strengthen leadership, improve culture, or build a more inclusive and resilient organisation. Increasingly, they understand that equity is central to performance, wellbeing and long‑term sustainability.
We also offer qualifications that support leaders at every stage of their development, but our most recent success has been the launch of our MBA in Leadership, Equity & Organisational Development – the first EDI-centred MBA in the UK. The MBA has been designed for people who have some involvement or influence in EDI matters who want to lead with clarity, courage and purpose, whether they work in education, business, health, the voluntary sector or beyond.
One of the biggest misconceptions about equity, diversity and inclusion work is that it’s about “fixing people” or delivering a one‑off training session. It isn’t. Equity is about redesigning systems, shifting cultures and enabling people to flourish. It requires honesty, curiosity and a willingness to rethink how things are done. When organisations understand that equity is about creating the conditions for excellence, the work becomes transformative.
Looking ahead, we’re entering an exciting phase of growth. We’re expanding our research portfolio, deepening our partnerships across Yorkshire and developing new opportunities for leaders committed to equity‑centred practice. We’re also building community‑focused initiatives that will bring together local organisations to explore shared challenges and collective solutions. Huddersfield will continue to be our home and our anchor as we grow this work.
Equity begins where we stand, and for us, that’s here, working alongside the people and organisations who are shaping a fairer future for our region.
