Brief History

The tower has been there since 1899, built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign. It has had many forms of settlement dating back to at least 2500 BC and is still treasured to this very day. It did have a well loved pub and inn until it’s demolition in 2005. However, nearby Almondbury has plenty of pubs and cafes to visit after the tower.

The Future Of This Great Landmark

There is a current application for a restaurant and bar on the site, including six bedrooms and a visitors’ centre with toilets. This was approved on October 28, 2020. The proposal aims to improve the visitor experience while maintaining the site’s natural beauty and historical importance. Once completed, the new facilities could transform Castle Hill into one of the major tourist attractions in Huddersfield, drawing more visitors from across the town and throughout the United Kingdom.

How To Get To Castle Hill

Castle Hill is a popular destination for walkers as well as those on bikes, cars or trips. There is a good size car park but the access road is narrow meaning large vehicles are not allowed up. There are many different walking paths leading up to Castle Hill as well as around it for people to enjoy. We advise that people are careful as these paths are usually steep and sometimes uneven, so lace those walking boots up tightly. See below for barrier opening and closing times.
