Six musicians from Leeds converge to create the vibrant sounds of MANGORATA.
Their music is a fusion of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Swing, and Funk, characterized by daring improvisation within a jungle of rhythms. Their performances oscillate between bustling rhythms and intimate, stripped-back melodies, showcasing a diverse range of musical textures. Having graced stages across Leeds and various UK venues, the band draws inspiration from musical luminaries like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Hermeto Pascoal, and others. Their latest self-titled EP, praised as “First class” by Jazz FM’s John Osborne, marks the inception of a fresh wave of Jazz that Mangorata is eager to proliferate.
Adding to the lineup is Yoshizawa, a Punk-Jazz explosion emerging from Leeds Conservatoire. Despite having only a handful of gigs under their belt, they’ve swiftly garnered a dedicated following with their moody, atmospheric soundscapes blending jazz improvisation, electronica, and post-punk influences. Led by drummer Amelie Yoshizawa, the band crafts original compositions that captivate audiences, as seen in their electrifying performance at DJ Lubi’s Leeds Jazz Festival main show at Brudenell Social Club in May.
